HIV/AIDS Community Health Development Project

The prevalence of HIV in Myanmar has been reported to be about 0.61 per cent (387,800) of the adult population aged 15-49 years. The results from the Estimation and Projection of HIV/AIDS (2009) revealed that approximately 238,000 adults and children are living with HIV in Myanmar at the end of 2009. The adult HIV prevalence peaked around 2000-2001 and since then there is a steady decline. MRCS aims to reduce the vulnerability and stigma from high-risk HIV/AIDS communities through education, monitoring, and improved access to care. CHDP targets 30,000 mine workers, over 500 MSM and sex workers, 2000 PLHIV and their relatives, and 60,000 members of the general community. Our main projects include:

• Targeted BCC/IEC interventions
• Ensuring access to and promoting the use of HIV/AIDS testing and counseling facilities
• RCVs undertake home visits and provide support for HIV-affected families
• Ensuring access to ART, treatment for opportunistic infections, STIs and PMTCT services, where available
• Facilitating the establishment and support to self-help groups of PLHIV and their relatives
• Awareness campaigns directed at decision makers, community leaders, and the public
• Sensitizing public/private health care professionals
